Heavy Duty - Charge Air Coolers
What is a Charge Air Cooler?
This is the part of the radiator that improves engine combustion efficiency. Charge air cooler are different from intercoolers because of their methods of utilization. A charge air cooler device resembles a radiator and uses ambient air to cool the intake air. An intercooler utilizes ambient air to cool water which then cools the intake air.

Function & Benefits
A charge air cooler functions like a cooling system radiator, cooling the intake air temperature. The benefits of a charge air cooler include:
- Cooler Intake Air
- Increased Horsepower
- Lower Emissions
- Increased Fuel Mileage
- Prolonged Engine Life
Care & Maintenance
Care and maintenance are a must in ensuring that a charge air cooler functions properly. Signs that a charge air cooler is not functioning properly include:
- Loose clamps or leaking connections
- Loose mounting bolts or cracked mount locations
- Dirt or obstruction in the cooler
- Dirt or obstruction in the cooler

Equipment for Recoring Charge Air Coolers
The equipment for welding a charge air cooler includes:
- TIG welders-The best choice for welding because it improves the skill level of the technician
- Wire brush-used for aluminum applications only
- Circular saw
- Finish grinder
Recore Procedure
The procedures for recoring a charge air cooler are:
- Measuring the core & other pertinent areas of measurement
- Review catalog to obtain core size
- Construct a welding jig around the core unit
- Remove tanks from the cooler
- Reassemble the core
